St. Mary's blanks Rochester in playoff opener
By Jeff Stearns
BLOOMFIELD HILLS--After a ten-day layoff, the Orchard Lake St. Mary's Ice Eaglets took the ice at the Detroit Skating Club with a flourish and blanked Rochester United, 7-0, in the opening round the M.H.S.A.A. hockey playoffs.
From start to finish for three periods, the Eaglets dominated Rochester in all facets of the game, particularly in shots on goal, 46-9.
It took nearly 14 minutes of the first period to find the net as Rochester goalie Brian Cohan made unbelievable save after save to deny the Eaglets. However, with 1:38 left in the period, Brandon Kozlowski's shot off the goal post went in to break the deadlock. Jon Falvo and Shane Halaas assisted for the Eaglets.
Coach Brian Klanow started backup goalie Devon Carr, who was a lonely man, having to turn away only one shot for the period.
In the second period, the Eaglets picked up where they left off, and did so with a vengence, scoring five goals. At 13:26, Tony Aukskalnis put a shot past goalie Cohan, again assisted by Jon Falvo and Steve Tallman. At 7:45, Billy Balent came down on a 2-on-0 breakaway, and scored unassisted.
Rochester United didn't help themselves defensively as they put five players in the penalty box for the period. At 6:03 on a power play, Kasper Bryniczka one-timed a pass from Steve Tallman into the Rochester goal. Jon Falvo again assisted. At 4:24, Tony Aukskalnis scored his second goal of the night after a great pass from behind the net by Clinton Bourbonais after Dan Stanisz dug the puck out of the corner. At. 1:13 on another power play, Brandon Kozlowski scored his second goal of the evening off assists from Steve Tallman and Jon Falvo. Eaglet goalie Devon Carr stopped six Rochester shots for the period.
The Eaglets seemed to spend the entire third period on a penalty kill, but still outshot Rochester, 12-2. At 9:12, Charlie Semaan scored the final Eaglet goal, assisted by Jon Falvo and Brandon Kozlowski. On the night, Falvo had 5 assists.
The Eaglets play Clarkston Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. Clarkston won 6-5 in overtime over Bloomfield United in the late game.
