St. Mary's finds scoring touch against Clarkston
By Jeff Stearns
ORCHARD LAKE--It's been a while in coming, 10 games to be exact, but the Orchard Lake St. Mary's Ice Eaglets finally scored more than 4 goals in a victory.
The Eaglets pummeled the Clarkston Wolves at home on Senior Night Saturday, 8-0, with a shots on goal margin of 26-10.
"I said this week that one of these days we're going to get some breaks and the puck is going to drop for us, well tonight it did," commented St. Mary's coach Brian Klanow.
And drop it did. St. Mary's scored three times in the first period, four times in the second, and ended the game at the 12:19 mark of the third period when Tim Hooker put the puck past Wolves goalie Zack Lewy after receiving the puck in front of the goal from Kasper Bryniczka. Sean Nagorsen started the sequence when he recovered Mac Watts' rebound shot in the corner and fed the puck to Bryniczka, who in turn sent it to Hooker.
Bryniczka, who had 2 goals and an assist on the night, started the scoring at 12:38 of the first period, with an assist from senior Steve Tallman. Senior Ben Shields scored the Eaglets' second goal at 5:01, with assists from seniors Brandon Kozlowski and Jon Falvo. Sophomore Dane Muller's power play goal from the top of the left circle, with assists from Kozlowski and Dan Stanisz, completed the scoring with 10 seconds left in the first period. The Eaglets outshot theWolves 7-4.
The Eaglets continued their domination in the second period. Senior defenseman Mac Watts' scored unassisted with a laser shot at 11:34 in between penalty kills. At 7:40, Wolves forward Steven Wyman was sent off for unnecessary roughness, and at 6:25, senior Jon Falvo scored on the power play off assists from Clinton Bourbonais and Watts. Three minutes later, Bryniczka scored his second goal of the night with another assist from Watts. Junior captain Billy Balent scored unassisted with 22 seconds left in the period to make the score 7-0. The Eaglets outshot the Wolves for the period 17-6.
The Eaglets started the third period on a penalty kill when Brandon Kozlowski was cited for a high stick to the head with 12 seconds left in the second period. St. Mary's won the opening faceoff, and kept Clarkston at bay until the penalty expired. Clinton Bourbonais narrowly missed ending the game but his short-handed attempt hit Wolves goalie Lewy in the left shoulder and went over the goal. The game ended on Hooker's goal as the mercy rule was invoked. It was only the Eaglets' second shot of the period.
St. Mary's (9-8-4) plays in the Trenton Showcase on Friday, February 9, against East Kentwood. The puck drops at 2 pm. On Saturday, the Eaglets face Birmingham United at 6:40 pm. Both games are at the Kennedy Recreation Center Ice Arena in Trenton. The Eaglets return to the SMAC Ice Arena on Saturday, February 17, for the Catholic League Championships, and will play in the runner-up game against Birmingham Brother Rice at 12 noon.
