Champs play for charity Wednesday
By Chris Lau/Detroit Free Press
Remember that historic eight-overtime state finals game last winter between Orchard Lake St. Mary's and Marquette?
The two schools meet again on Wednesday to open their hockey seasons. All proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The coaches – Brian Klanow of St. Mary's and Joe Papin of Marquette – want to use the publicity the game generated for something positive.
“We wanted take something that was unique – a record-breaking state championship game – and try to capitalize on the publicity and do something great to people in need,” Klanow said.
The rematch, dubbed “Champs for Charity,” will take place 8 p.m. at St. Mary's. Tickets are $5.
There will also be a fundraising banquet the night before, on Tuesday, at St. Mary's. Red Wings Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay will be the guest speaker.
In March, the teams skated to a 1-1 tie in the Division 1 title game. After eight overtimes, the Michigan High School Athletic Association declared co-champions, and both teams posed with the trophy. At 109 minutes, it was the longest prep hockey game, time-wise, in U.S. history.
