Eaglets avenge loss to Cubs

ORCHARD LAKE--In a battle of third-place teams at the Catholic League Championships on Saturday, Orchard Lake St. Mary's beat U-D Jesuit, 4-2, to avenge an early season overtime loss to the Cubs.
The Eaglets drew first blood when Cody King scored a power play goal at 13:14 of the first period with an assist from Billy Balent.
The Eaglets dominated the second period, outshooting the Cubs, 18-11, and scoring two goals. The first came at 12:40 when Nick Czinder scored unassisted, and the second came at 11:18 when Aaron Schneider scored on a 5-on-3 power play, with assists from Shane Halaas and Dane Muller.
The Eaglets took a 4-0 lead in the third period when Mike Szmatula scored at 13:38, with an assist from Aaron Schneider. The Cubs fought back with two goals to narrow the margin. Anthony Stempin scored on a power play at 10:53, with an assist from Mike Yanis. At 6:37, Ian Monkman scored a short-handed goal with assists from Patrick Riedy and Evan Moore.
The Eaglets shut down the Cubs for the remainder of the game to seal the victory.
Chris Sullivan of St. Mary's had 24 saves in goal, and Justin Evans had 28 for the Cubs.
St. Mary's (9-12-2) hosts Farmington on Wednesday, February 20, for Senior Night. The Eaglets open the state playoffs on Monday, February 25, against Bloomfield United.
