PLYMOUTH--Orchard Lake St. Mary's and Marquette played the longest hockey game in Michigan high school history Saturday. The teams were tied, 1-1, after regulation time, then played eight scoreless eight-minute overtime periods, for a total of 109 minutes of hockey. Following the eighth OT period, Michigan High School Athletic Association officials decided to end the contest, due to concerns about the players' health. Both teams were declared Division 1 co-champions.

Marquette's Mike Peterson opened the scoring with a power play goal at 9:01 of the second period. Peterson pounced on a loose puck following a goalmouth scramble, with Eric Rizzio gaining the assist.

The score remained 1-0 until late in the third period. St. Mary's coach Brian Klanow pulled goalie Ryan Morley-Stockton for an extra attacker when the Eaglets gained a face off in Marquette's zone with 1:36 remaining in regulation time. Shane Halaas won the draw and got the puck to Tim Hooker, who'd skated to the net. Hooker beat goalie Jon Nezich at the 13:28 mark for what turned out to be the game's final goal.

Both teams had scoring chances throughout the overtime periods, although Marquette had more opportunities to the end the contest. Morley-Stockton stopped several breakaways on his way to a 57-save effort. Nezich finished with 33 stops.

The game was a rematch of the 2007 D-1 final, won by the Eaglets, 4-2. The co-championship gives St. Mary's three state hockey titles in four years, including the Division 3 crown in 2005.
