St. Mary's, Marquette meet again

Steve Knoche / Special to The Detroit News

CANTON -- Orchard Lake St. Mary's is trying to win its second straight state title. And just like last year, it will have to go through Marquette.

Marquette's players admitted they were rooting for St. Mary's in its Division 1 semifinal game with Clarkston (11-16-2). They got their wish when St. Mary's (15-12-2) earned a 2-0 victory Friday at Compuware Arena.

"We want our revenge," Marquette forward John Aho said after his team's 3-0 victory over Grosse Pointe North.

Marquette fell 4-2 to St. Mary's in the 2006-07 state finals. It hopes to earn the school's fifth state championship and first since 2004.

With both winning goalies -- Marquette's Jon Nezich (39 saves) and St. Mary's Ryan Morley-Stockton (19 saves) -- posting shutouts Friday, the game might come down to which one plays better.

"Some games come down to goalies, and I'm ready to play," Morley-Stockton said. "There might be some goals, there might not, but I'm ready to play."
