March 8 was an epic day in Michigan high school hockey.
That night, in the Division 1 state championship game at Compuware Arena, Marquette and Orchard Lake St. Mary's skated to an eight-overtime, 1-1 tie, and they were declared co-champions by the Michigan High School Athletic Association
It was the longest prep hockey game in U.S. history.
The attention it received was indicative of its historic nature. The game was a hot topic in blogs and message boards across cyberspace, and it was featured in an ESPN.com column and the front page of your Detroit Free Press on March 10.
Over the summer, Marquette coach Joe Papin and St. Mary's coach Brian Klanow decided to put the attention to good use.
On Wednesday, Nov. 26, the night before Thanksgiving, St. Mary's and Marquette will play a rematch in both teams' 2009 season opener in the “Champs for Charity” game. The puck drops at 8 p.m. at St. Mary's.
Tickets are $5 and will go on sale starting Monday, Oct. 20. All proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
