ORCHARD LAKE -- Orchard Lake St. Mary's dominated visiting Catholic Memorial of Wisconsin, 5-2, in boys hockey action on Friday night.
The Eaglets outshot the Crusaders 14-2 in the first period. Eaglet Scott Walter scored at 15:24 off assists from Zak Thompson and Curran Reuschlein. At 15:13 the Eaglets scored again when freshman Cooper Anstett put the puck past the Crusader goalie with assists from Dan Milan and Cody Loyer. David Butterfield of the Crusaders scored at 10:37 with an assist from Noah Lentz.
The second period was much like the first as the Eaglets outshot the Crusaders 11-3. St. Mary's took advantage of two Crusaders penalties to score two power play goals, the first by Zak Thompson at 8:33 with assists from Ryan Foe and Dan Milan, and the second by Kevin Killian at 5:04 with assists from Zak Thompson and Ryan Foe. The Eaglets killed off a 5-on-3 penalty, and then another penalty, only to have the Crusaders score their second goal with 8 seconds left in the period to narrow the lead to 4-2. The Crusader goal was by Kyle Fink with an assist from Sam Chapin.
The third period was again dominated by the Eaglets, who outshot the Crusaders, 15-4. The lone goal of the period was scored short-handed on a penalty kill by Eaglet Ian Brambs on an empty net with assists from Matt Sweet and Cody King.
Eaglet senior goalie Jack Kare stopped 7 of 9 Crusader shots. Crusader senior goalie David Chapin had 35 saves.
St. Mary's hosts Clarkston on Saturday evening.
