ORCHARD LAKE--Shane Halaas scored three goals to lead Orchard Lake St. Mary's over Clarkston, 5-0, in the Division 1 boys hockey pre-regional final on Wednesday night. The Eaglets (20-5-1) will meet Birmingham Unified, a 4-1 victor over Troy Athens, in the regional final on Saturday, Marcy 7, at the Troy Sports Center. The puck drops at 6:15 pm.
Both the Eaglets and the Wolves played at a very up-tempo pace during the first period. With 3:22 left in the period, Halaas scored what turned out to be the winning goal with assists from Matt Uhrin and Dane Muller. St. Mary's outshot Clarkston 10-4 for the period.
The second period started just like the first, but at the 8:34 mark, the roof fell in on the Wolves as Jonathan Kello scored the first for four second-period goals for St. Mary's. Four minutes later, Max Borchers scored for the Eaglets off an assist from Zak Thompson, then a little over a minute later, Halaas got his second goal with help from Nick Czinder and Jordan Kieltyka, and then just as an Eaglet power play was about to end with a minute to go in the period, Halaas got his "hat trick" with an assist from Czinder. Clarkston goalie Garrett Knappe faced 16 Eaglet shots in the period but could only stop 12. Conversely, Eaglet goalie Max Oslund only had to stop two as the game was played mostly in the Clarkston end.
The third period was uneventful as neither team scored with St. Mary's outshooting Clarkston 8-4.
On the night, the Eaglets outshot the Wolves, 34-10.
The shutout was Eaglet goalie Max Oslund's third of the season.
Clarkston finishes its season at 9-16-1.
