BEVERLY HILLS--Stewart Shannon showed why he might just be the best lacrosse player in the state, scoring six goals as Birmingham Detroit Country Day defeated Orchard Lake St. Mary's , 10-0.
Shannon scored three goals in each of the first and third quarters, dominating St. Mary's interior defense.
"He played a great game, " Country Day head coach John Kenney said. "When he's playing at his best, he can take control of the game."
Shannon is having an all-state type of year again, and even more impressive is that he's just a junior.
"He's a tough kid," St. Mary's head coach Paul Nemzek said. "The kid could be an All-American. I got the chance to coach him last year, and you just walk away impressed. He's a great athlete."
Alex Cavalieri had five saves in the shutout for Country Day (5-3). He anchored a defense that controlled the tempo of the game.
"We were able to control possession," Kenney said. "Our last couple games, we really struggled to gain any momentum because we were giving up easy layup goals. Today, we cut those out and played tight defense."
St. Mary's (1-6) was never able to get near a goal, settling for low-percentage shots.
"We didn't handle their pressure well," Nemzek said. "We really couldn't get control of the ball. We kept turning it over and making bad decisions."
Country Day now meets Birmingham Seaholm on Friday, in the second annual "Battle to beat cancer."
"It's something very important to me and my team," Kenney said. "All proceeds from the game go to the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Last year, we raised over $8500, this year we plan to top it."
