Rice defense too much for St. Mary's in CHSL playoff

BIRMINGHAM--Birmingham Brother Rice advanced to the Catholic League A Division Lacrosse Championship on Saturday with a hard-fought 10-6 victory over Orchard Lake St. Mary's on Tuesday at the Warriors' field.

The Eaglets scored first in the contest, but the Warriors came back with 5 unanswered goals. St. Mary's didn't falter and scored 3 scores to end the first period down by one, 5-4.

The second period saw the Warriors change from a man-to-man defense to a zone and hold the Eaglets scoreless while scoring once to take a 6-4 lead at halftime.

St. Mary's came back in the third period to narrow the lead to one goal, 6-5.

Brother Rice scored three quick goals in the final period to take a 9-5 lead before the Eaglets scored to make it 9-6. A late Warrior goal accounted for the final margin.

St. Mary's saw its record go to 10-4 overall, with two of the losses at the hands of #1-ranked Brother Rice. The Eaglets are ranked #3 in LaxPower's state rankings.

St. Mary's plays at Farmington on Thursday, while Brother Rice plays in the CHSL final at 7 pm on Saturday at Pontiac Notre Dame Prep.
