Brother Rice holds off St. Mary's
ORCHARD LAKE--Top-ranked Birmingham Brother Rice got a scare on Sunday afternoon, holding off Orchard Lake St. Mary's, 12-11, in Catholic League A Division boys lacrosse action.
It was a "battle royal" between the Warriors and the Eaglets, as St. Mary's continues play hard and well for Coach Greg Normand.
The teams were tied 3-3 after the first period. The Warriors came out and scored three goals in the second to take a 6-3 lead, but the Eaglets hunkered down and chipped away at the lead, tying the contest, 6-6, just before halftime.
St. Mary's shocked the Warriors early in the third, scoring twice to take a 8-6 lead, which was short-lived as the Warriors came back to score four times to lead at the start of the final period, 10-8.
St. Mary's scored to come within one at 10-9, but the Warriors then scored twice to take a 12-9 lead. The Eaglets fought valiantly and scored twice more to make it a one-goal game with 35 second remaining in the game, but the Warriors' played keep-away to preserve the victory.
