St. Mary's beats De La Salle to win regional title


PONTIAC--Orchard Lake St. Mary's beat Warren De La Salle, 9-6, to win its first regional title since 2004 on Saturday evening.

In a closely contested game, the Eaglets led throughout, and although the Pilots closed to within one goal in the third period, St. Mary's closed out the game by outscoring De La Salle 3-1 in the final period.

Senior captain Scott Koenigsknecht led the way for St. Mary's with three goals and an assist, followed by Drew Schupbach with two goals and an assist. Senior Tom Pellerito scored twice, and Ian Brambs and Taylor Docking each had a goal. Drake Chwalibog and Docking also each contributed an assist.

Senior goalie Adam Hatchard had 12 saves, and held off the Pilots in the final period with several timely stops.

Senior Josh Abbott won 13 faceoffs.

St. Mary's meets Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central in the Division 2 semifinals at Holt on Wednesday, June 3, at 6 pm. The winner advances to the Division 2 Championship at Troy Athens on Saturday, June 6, at 5 pm.
