St. Mary's outlasts Columbus (OH) Wooster

GAMBIER, OHIO - Behind the clutch goaltending of senior captain Adam Hatchard and five goals from Drake Chwalibog, the Eaglets beat Midwest League power Wooster, 11-9, at Kenyon College Sunday afternoon.

The win extends St. Mary's record to 5-1, the best start for an Eaglet team in nine years.

St. Mary's offense was also fueled by Ian Brambs, who scored one goal and added five assists, to bring his six game total season numbers to 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists, 6.00 points per game) But it was the defense that carried the Eaglets down the stretch.

"You have to win a big game once in a while to begin the process of making winning a habit...we took that step today and I think it was an important win for this program right now," said Greg Normand, St. Mary's head coach. "After losing a tough one to Catholic Central, where I really think we didn't play our best, and please, don't take anything away from CC, I just think we played like we're capable of and it showed on the scoreboard."

Normand said Stephan Knoblock and Kevin DiSalle were defensive standouts the entire weekend.

"You could not have asked them to play any better," Normand said. "And Adam (Hatchard) played the way he finished up at the end of last year and that was solid...almost brillant. Adam's emergence will certainly bolster our chances if he continues to play that way."

Normand did, however, warn his team that they have to stop the sloppiness if they want to continue their winning ways. The Eaglets have committed 47 unforced ball errors in the last three games and sent 18 athletes to the penalty box in three games, almost tripling their totals from the first trio of games.

"This has to stop or we'll be behind in every game," Normand said. "I am happy we won, but we still have a lot to correct."
