St. Mary's wins state playoff opener
ORCHARD LAKE--Rising from the ashes like a phoenix, Orchard Lake St. Mary's won its first state playoff game in four years with a 13-5 victory over Grosse Pointe South on Wednesday.
The Eaglets dominated the scoring in the first half with five goals in the opening period and two in the second to lead 7-0 at halftime. The Blue Devils rebounded with four goals in the third period to narrow St. Mary's lead to 9-4 at the end of three. St. Mary's closed out the game with four final period goals for the win.
Ian Brambs led St. Mary's (15-4) with five goals on eight shots, in addition to two assists, followed by Taylor Docking with two goals and an assist. Tom Pellerito, Alex Houck, Drew Schupbach, Drake Chwalibog, and Doug Boyd also had goals for the Eaglets. Freshman Spencer McGinnis scored his first goal for St. Mary's.
Nicky Diehl and John LoVasco scored for the Blue Devils (8-10).
St. Mary's will meet Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (12-4) on Wednesday, May 27, in the regional semifinals.
