ORCHARD LAKE - The Holt Rams (13-5) (7-0 CAAC) came into Friday night's lacrosse game against Orchard Lake St. Mary's (7-10) (0-4 CHSL) ranked inside the top 10 in the state, and had won their conference championship. In a seesaw battle for three quarters, the Rams outplayed St. Mary's in the fourth, scoring two goals to win the game, 7-4.
“We got a young team, but we're learning every game,” St. Mary's head coach Greg Normand said.
Holt's Skyler Dutkiewicz owned the first half of the game. Dutkiewicz scored three of Holt's four goals in the first two quarters. The Eaglets were able to hang around on goals by Spencer McInnis and Chris Koski, making the score 4-2 at the half.
The Eaglets came on with a strong performance in the third on goals by Chris Koski, and Mike Koenigsknecht.
With the score deadlocked at four, Holt's Paul Schalau broke the tie and gave the Rams the lead 5-4 after three quarters.
“We gave one of the best teams in the state all they could handle,” Normand said.
Holt's Mark Hildenbrand took over the final quarter with two goals for the Rams. The Eaglets were not able to counter and were held scoreless in the fourth. Although neither of Hildenbrand's two goals were the winner, he really brought the Rams over the hill, and put the game out of reach for St. Mary's.
“We were out of sorts a little without Steve McKee, but different kids stepped up today, which was good to see. Credit St. Mary's for a gritty performance, and making us earn the victory,” Holt head coach Mike Van Antwerp said.
