Birmingham Brother Rice destroys St. Mary's

BIRMINGHAM -- The scoreboard said it all.

The Warriors dismantled an under-manned St. Mary’s varsity lacrosse team Wednesday in the opening round of the Catholic High School League (CHSL) 24-3. Brother Rice dominated the Eaglets in every statistical category that mattered except unforced errors,
where St. Mary’s hit a season high with 34 miscues.

The lone bright spot for St. Mary’s was the play of junior face-off specialist Spencer McInnis, who accounted for 16 face-off wins, two goals, one assist and 14 groundballs.

“Spencer played his heart out and played like the all-state player that I think he will eventually earn this year,” said Greg Normand, St. Mary’s head coach. “I’d like to have six more Spencers.”

Normand said there wasn’t much the inexperienced Eaglet’s could do with Rice’s aggressive defense and experienced offense.

“These are the kinds of games that your younger players will look at and wonder why they played so bad and hopefully gain some experience or they will become even more afraid on a lacrosse field and eventually fade away……we’ll have to see with time what
happens,” Normand said.

Normand mentioned he was a bit surprised to see Rice’s starters still playing with a 20-goal lead near the end of the fourth quarter, but mentioned that Rob Ambrose, Rice’s iconic head coach, never let’s up on the gas.

“You can complain about being run in the ground and wave the white flag and say all those things about sportsmanship…….or you can man-up, learn something from getting ripped and improve,” Normand said. “I never make excuses about losing or winning
big……we have to improve and improve quickly, but I am not really worried right now because this might be the best lesson our team could experience.”

Normand said Rice is a great team and St. Mary’s needs to pay attention to how they played.

“We came close the last couple of years of competing and we will again…we just have to take a moment out of the calendar and realize what we need to do to improve and a game like this only makes us stronger,” he said.

The number of goals scored by Brother Rice was erased from the St, Mary’s scorebook, team officials said, and Sean Dupack was the only other bright spot during a dismissal performance by the Eaglets. Dupack scored the other Eaglet goal. Steven Keith, in goal,
did have a few moments, according to Normand.

“We’ve challenged Steven to improve and I really saw some nice things tonight…..he just has to keep getting better,” Normand said.

St. Mary’s top defenseman, P.J. Walters, was out of the Rice game from a injury suffered during the Ann Arbor Huron game. The Eaglets are also without the services of their top offensive player Doug Boyd, who is out for the season with a broken leg
