St. Mary's finally erupts against Plymouth
ORCHARD LAKE– The St. Mary's offense finally exploded and dominated a Kensington Lakes Athletic Association foe in lacrosse Tuesday by blasting Plymouth 16-2. But the Eaglets coaching staff warned the troops to not get overly confident by one victory.
“It's always nice when you win and today, we won a lopsided contest against Plymouth. But its just one game,” warned Greg Normand , St. Mary's head coach. “We have to remember what happened last week against Rice and realize that this is just one game….I will keep repeating myself, but we have to remember that until mid-May.”
St. Mary's finally saw an offensive production that was reminiscent of last year's potent attack. Evan Considine's seven points led the Eaglets on four goals and three assists. Nick Parr , the Eaglets offensive quarterback, had his best game to date netting two goals and three assists. Chris Koski , another explosive junior who is emerging as a team leader, had a goal to go along with four assists. Mike Koenigsknecht had the hat trick with three goals on three shots and Spencer McInnis , the hard working face-off specialist, had a goal and an assist to go along with 11 ground balls. Paul Graham , a defenseman, and Nick Lewandowski , Brandon Fagnani and Garrett Anderson scored for the winners.
“It was nice to see Nick Parr have a good game against Plymouth. With Doug Boyd breaking his leg and being gone for the year, we've asked Nick to step up and replace an All-American ( Ian Brambs ) who scored more than 300 points in his varsity career at St. Mary's. That's not an easy task, but Nick played with the poise of a veteran and hopefully he continues to improve,” Normand said.
The biggest surprise of the young season has been the play of junior Spencer McInnis, who is developing into one of the strongest face-off specialists in the state.
“He's becoming a dominant player and he just continues to get better every game,” said Chris Brecht , St. Mary's defensive coach.
The other shining spot for St. Mary's is Mike Koenigsknecht , who is playing lacrosse for the first time since junior high school.
“When we lost Doug, I thought we were lost offensively,” Normand said. “And then I remembered we had a Koenigsknecht on the roster. By the end of the season, he might be the best mid-fielder we have on the team. I can't believe how much he brings to the field and the locker room and he's just getting better every day.”
Brecht said his defense is beginning to find their legs. Graham, along with P.J. Walters , who is headed to Adrian College next year, Michael Killian and Derek Bernard have all stepped up their games to help bolster the back lines.
The Eaglets scored 16 goals on 43 shots and 11 caroms were assisted. St. Mary's won most of the statistical categories, picking up 43 ground balls to Plymouth's 31 and they won the face-off war 15-6. The Eaglets still continue to turn the ball over committing 21 unforced errors.
“That unforced number concerns me, but we're young and just learning to catch and throw,” Normand said. “But it better improve…and soon.”
St. Mary's entertains the University of Detroit at home Thursday night at 6 pm and travels to Adrian College to host Plymouth Salem Saturday at 5 pm.
