With Wyandotte and Hebda Cup regattas already captured this season, the Orchard Lake St. Mary's rowing team is enjoying another successful season.
The 1,500-meter race at Wyandotte on the Wyandotte River, shortened to a 1,000-meter sprint because of windy conditions, didn't matter to the Eaglets.
Battling against Crossley from Canada and Marietta from Ohio, St. Mary's took the lead with a first place from the Men's Junior Four - Jacob Hekker, Tim Simon, Jonathan Misch, Drew Boike and coxswain Mike Moran - followed by another first by the Men's Novice 140-pound Four - composed of Colin Blour, Will Cafero, Evan Brostek, Ben Caplinger and coxswain Kevin Kowolski.
Several second place finishes helped St. Mary's hold off its foes, giving the Eaglets, who scored 135 points, the title for the 10th consecutive year.
St. Mary's proved the best of all Michigan high school crews at the Hebda Memorial Challenge, also held on the Wyandotte River.
The Men's Junior Eight initiated a comeback after trailing in second place by eight points with their second-place finish.
The Men's Senior Eight (Ian Croll, Jacob Hekker, Tim Simon, Chase Cunitz, Austin Niemiec, Joe Ham, Tony Dorchak, Alex Leonowicz and coxswain David Zelenock) never relinquished an early lead to finish first. St. Mary's also won the Men's Junior Four with Jacob Hekker, Tim Simon, Jonathan Misch, Drew Boike and coxswain Mike Moran. The Eaglets were second in the Men's Senior Four and Men's Junior Eight and third with the Men's Lightweight Eight. Some 18 Michigan crews competed.
The Eaglets competed at Midwest Regatta last weekend at Stoney Creek Metropark.
