St. Mary's rows to consecutive wins
West Bloomfield Eccentric
| ORCHARD LAKE -- The Orchard Lake St. Mary's crew team posted back-to-back victories in the annual Hebda Cup and Wy-Hi regattas held on April 30 and May 6-7, respectively.
The extreme cold and windy conditions for the Hebda Cup made for tough going for all competitors. The Eaglets finished with 42 points to retain the title they've held for more than a decade. The team posted victories in five of the 16 races. St. Mary's winners included: the Men's Junior 4 with cox Mike Moran and oarsmen Jonathan Misch, John Conners, Tim Simon and Scott Catanzaro; the Men's Novice 8 with cox John Miskena and oarsmen Tom Stachelski, Mike Lucas, Andrew McNary, Aaron Koski, Carl Goeckel, Alex Goodroe, David Trudeau and Ian Silveira; the Men's Novice 4 with cox Miskena and oarsmen McNary, Lucas, Koski and Silveira; the Men's Junior 8 with cox Moran and oarsmen Misch, Simon, Catanzaro, Conners, Justin Summers, James Shubert, Chad Cummings and Stu Langner; and the Men's Light weight 4 with cox Justin Elwood and oarsmen Matthew Rejc, Michael Watson, Drew Richards and Ryan Estes. Second-place finishes by the Men's Light Weight 8 and the Senior 8 helped secure the victory. Even though the weather was much nicer the following weekend for the Wy-Hi, the results were the same, with St. Mary's coming out on top with a total of 144 points and retaining the title for the 13th straight year. St. Mary's posted three first-place finishes, two second-places and one third. Leading the way for the Eaglets were: the Men's Junior 4 with cox Moran and oarsmen Misch, Conners, Simon and Catanzaro; the Men's Junior 8 with cox Moran and oarsmen Misch, Simon, Catanzaro, Conners, Summers, Shubert, Cummings and Langner; and the Men's 140-lb. 4 with cox Elwood and oarsmen Rejc, Watson, Richards and Estes. The Eaglets traveled to Columbus, Ohio May 13 and 14, where they participated in the Midwest Rowing Championships. This weekend, however, they were without their seniors, who were back at campus being honored at graduation. The underclassmen did finish third overall with strong performances from the juniors and the novice entries. |
