St. Mary's crew closes out season
The Oakland Press
After a change at head coach, much reorganizing and a season full of bad weather, Orchard Lake St. Mary's crew head coach John Ray told his men, when they showed up at the Jack Speakmon Memorial Regatta in Columbus, Ohio, that their last regatta of the fall season mirrored the season itself.
The weather was so horrible that it didn't look like they were going to be able to row. The beginning of this regatta seemed as difficult as the start of their season.
But then, just like their season, conditions began to look better for the rowers. The weather improved, the team came together, and by the end of the day, the young men of the St. Mary's crew turned in an impressive performance.
The highlight of the day was when the crew's lightweight eight consisting of Evans Brosteck, Kevin Kowalski, Adam Montville, Tom Stachalski, Evan Lyons, Rob Hurles, Mike DiCuiccio, David Trudeau and coxswain John Miskena, took second place, only three seconds behind the winner.
Robbie "Bobo" Clemente had a solid performance, finishing fourth in a rare race for the Eaglets, the men's open lightweight single.
The heavyweight four and eight crews took fourth and seventh respectively. The Speakmon hosted more than 550 entries from 56 different teams.
As Ray said, their regatta, like their season, had gotten off to a difficult start. But both had finished, making the future look very bright.
