CINCINNATI--The St. Mary's crew team won three events and finished in second place overall at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association Championships, held May 12-14 in Cincinnati.
More than 40 high school crew teams from the Midwest participated in the event.
Three different St. Mary's boats took first-place finishes, including the Varsity 4, with Scott Catanzaro, Tim Simon, Jonathan Misch, James Shubert and Mike Moran. Also finishing first was the Varsity Pair (Mike DiCiuccio and Tom Stachelski) and the Novice 4 (Bret Anstett, Brad Burns, Sean Johnston, Pierce Niemiec and John Theide).
Additionally, the Varsity Lightweight 4 (John Miskena, Matt Rejc, Kevin Kowalski, Sean Graham and Andrew Richards) finished second and qualified for the SRAA Nationals.
"Our crew really stepped up for the Midwest Championships," said St. Mary's head coach Michael German. "After some disappointing finishes in the two weeks prior, our team attacked the workout program and came up with some spectacular race-day performances."
This was the fourth of six regattas St. Mary's will participate in this season. The Eaglets competed in the Oak Ridge Scholastic Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on April 22, plus the Hebda Cup and Wyandotte Regattas, both of which took place in Wyandotte.
The team's next event will be the SRAA Nationals in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on May 27. Over 100 high school crews from the U.S. will participate. The Eaglets will compete for the National Championship in the Varsity 4 and the Varsity Lightweight 4.
