St. Mary's crew win silver medals in final regatta

ST. CATHERINE'S, ONT.--The Orchard Lake St. Mary's crew team had reason to celebrate at its final regatta of the season, the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association Regatta. The Eaglets won two silver medals at this national championship event.Over 150 high school crews from the U.S. and Canada participated in the regatta.
The following St. Mary's boats took honors:
"This regatta was the grand finale to six we participated in this season," added German. "Our crew began the season at the Oak Ridge Dogwood Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on April 22. We finished second at both the Hebda Cup and Wyandotte High School Regattas, which took place in Wyandotte. We also placed second at the Midwest Scholastic Regatta in Cincinnati. Then, the OLSM Crew went on to qualify two boats, the Varsity 4-plus and the Lightweight 4-plus, for the SRAA National Regatta in Saratoga Springs, N.Y . In the final event of our season, our younger rowers grabbed the spotlight with two silver medals at the prestigious Canadian regatta to crown our 30th year of rowing at Orchard Lake."
The St. Mary's Rowing program was founded in 1976 by Judson Ross. Jack LeBlanc built the program to national prestige in his 15 years as head coach.
Kevin Van Houten led the team to American and Canadian National Championships in 1998.German took over as head coach in 1999 and has guided the program to regional and national success.Over the past 30 years, the OLSM Crew has made its home on Orchard Lake and has competed in the U.S., Canada, and even in the Royal Henley Regatta in England.
