St. Mary's grad wins title

School may be out for senior captain Ronald Dorchak of Mercyhurst College but memories are still vivid of his competition at the National Invitational Championships of rowing in Worcester, Mass.

Dorchak, a graduate of Orchard Lake St. Mary's Preparatory School, was a member of the men's varsity four which won the gold medal in the 1,500-meter event.

The group broke the course and championship record with a time of 6:37.509, beating the previous mark of 6:39.53.  Colgate was second in 6:45.57 and Seattle Pacific was third in 6:46.97.

For Dorchak, of Wixom, a better ending couldn't have been written for the two-time team MVP.  Bad weather threatened this year's competition, which was delayed some three hours because of thunderstorms.

But when the competition resumed, the Lakers were on a mission.  Dorchak and his crew started off fast, lengthened their lead with every stroke and pushed for the course record in the last 500 meters.
