OLSM Crew Regatta to kick off Prep Open House Weekend
By Jeff Stearns
ORCHARD LAKE — Orchard Lake St. Mary's Crew Team will host the crew team from Cleveland (OH) St. Ignatius on Saturday, April 21, 2007. The regatta will be the first in 22 years on the blue waters of Orchard Lake.
The regatta starts at 8 am and will kick off a full weekend of events culminating in St. Mary's Preparatory's annual Spring Open House on Sunday, April 22, 2007.
“We invite everyone to join us that day,” said Head Crew Coach John Ray. “For those who have never experienced the fun and excitement of a regatta, this is a good time to do so and to help cheer on the home team.”
The regatta will get underway at the LeBlanc Boat House on the St. Mary's campus, and is expected to conclude by 1 pm.
The St. Mary's Crew Team is considered by many to be the preeminent high school rowing team in the state of Michigan , and among the traditional powers in the Midwest . The Eaglets have won the Hebda Cup, symbolic of the state rowing championship, 12 times, the Wyandotte Regatta 12 times, and the Midwest Scholastic Championship on 6 occasions.
The St. Mary's Crew Team may have had its finest year in its 30-year history in the spring of 1998, when not only did the team win the Wyandotte Regatta, the Hebda Cup, the overall team Midwest Championship, the Senior 8 crew went undefeated throughout the regular season. They won the prestigious Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia , the Canadian Schoolboy Championships, the U.S. National Championships and gained international recognition by taking second in the Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-Thames , England . Several members then went on the successful college rowing careers, and Prep alumnus David Simon competed in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney , Australia , as a member of the 8-man crew that finished fifth.
