ORCHARD LAKE — On the morning of Saturday, April 21st on Orchard Lake , the two consistently fastest high school crews west of Pittsburgh and east of the Rockies will open their seasons together. They will do this in the first annual Canfield Cup Regatta. There has not been a race like this on Orchard Lake in 22 years.

Orchard Lake St. Mary's crew has invited the crew from Cleveland 's St. Ignatius to Orchard Lake to compete for this years ownership of the Canfield Cup. These crews have finished either first or second in the U.S. Midwest regionals most of the last ten years.

“This race will show if a crew starts out the clear favorite for Midwests again, or if they have six short weeks to regroup and pull for an upset.” Said St. Mary's head coach John Ray. “I've known St. Ignatius well for ten years, they are good at sports, great competitors, and old friends. I especially want to beat my friends, because I know they will bring me their best race. It is a bold move for us and for St. Ignatius head coach Previts to put each others toughest competitors at the beginning of the season…that's what keeps us sharp.”

The regatta begins around 8:00 am with the raising of the flag near the St. Mary's boat house on campus. The finish line for these 1500 meter races is also planned for this area, weather permitting. The smaller boats, one to four rowers will start shortly after opening ceremonies. These boats should finish around 10:00 am. There will be an hour break before the eight man boats begin with the first of these races scheduled for a little after 11:00 am. Points will be awarded for each race. Most total points will be holder of the Canfield Cup until the rematch next year.
