St. Mary's completes spring season
By Dan Sahutske
ST. CATHERINE'S, ONTARIO--On Thursday, May 31st at 9:00 am, the towing group for the crew of St. Mary's Preparatory left for the last race of their season, the Canadian Nationals. Any high school crew in the world is invited, and the fastest boats come from as far as three thousand miles away.
Of the nine St. Mary's boats racing, three made it all the way to the finals on Sunday, which is no small accomplishment in itself. They weren't done yet.
Kevin Kowalski and David Trudeau rowed their pair without coxswain to a very respectable 6th place finish, against some very tough competition.
Ian Silvera finished barely out of the medals in his single scull with a fourth place, and Brad Burns, Shane Seelig, Sean Jonston, and Gabe Charette, coxed by Luke Davis had a unbelievable first place finish in the junior four.
Head coach John Ray said,” Silvera, after having practiced in the single scull for only two weeks, was almost able to get third. It takes years to learn to row that boat, and for him to finish that far up, that quick, is phenomenal. The junior four powered through the middle of their race showing their strength from months of hard training, coming in first in a field of over twenty of the best crews in North America . Those are some great boys and I am looking forward to what is in their future."
St. Mary's crew sent two boats to the U.S. Nationals in Camden, New Jersey, on May 25 and 26. The junior 8 finished 10th and the junior 4 (Brad Burns, Shane Seelig, Sean Jonston, and Gabe Charette, coxed by Luke Davis) finished 4th.
