St. Mary's crew hosts Toledo St. John's Jesuit
By JOHN RAY, Head Crew Coach
ORCHARD LAKE--
On Saturday, September 22, St. Mary's kicked off their homecoming day with a
regatta on Orchard Lake. The Eaglets hosted St. John's Jesuit from Toledo , a growing power in the Midwest . The races were run under breezy conditions that resulted in bumpy water and a wet ride, but everyone got in a safe race on about
a 3 1/2 mile course taking from 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
The results for the regatta are:
In the 4's, St. Mary's won the first three places; Heavyweights, Lightweights, and Heavyweight B, with two St. John's boats following.
In the Novice 8's, St. Mary's took 2nd to a very strong A boat, and beat St. Johns ' B boat by 1 second. Very exciting race. They beat the C boat as well. The St. Mary's B boat had some problems but came in safely.
In the Varsity, St. Mary's A Light 8 won, and our B Light Eight pushed St. John's, getting to within 6 seconds, showing good program depth.
The Heavy Varsity 8 had a tough go of it, but will be back for St. Ignatius in Cleveland, Ohio in three weeks.
