St. Mary's crew visits St. Ignatius

CLEVELAND, OHIO-- On Saturday, two of the leading crews in the midwest met in Cleveland for a friendly test of fall training. St. Mary's of Orchard Lake, last year's Michigan State Champion and St. Ignatius of Cleveland, last year's Midwest Champion tested the twisting waters of the Cuyahoga ("crooked" in Seneca) River on a course that could baffle the best of curving course coxswains.

In the Heavy Varsity fours, St. Mary's prevailed, with a first and third to St. Ignatius' second and fourth. In the light fours,
St. Ignatius won. In the novice fours, St. Ignatius had an outstanding entry, followed by two St. Mary's boats, then a St. Ignatius lightweight entry and the St. Mary's lightweights.

During the break the St. Mary's oarsmen were treated to the sight of a 400 foot gravel barge, the "Cleveland Rocks" go
up the river with her 2000 horsepower tug, a good reason to take a breather between races.

In the varsity eights, two St. Ignatius boats got by St. Mary's. "We have some depth." was Matt Previts, Head Coach of
St. Ignatius' comment.

In some close racing, St. Ignatuis' Light eights took first and third to St. Mary's second and fourth.

In the novice and freshman eights, St. Ignatuis prevailed, although St. Mary's novice coxswain Zach Lunsford put up a
great defense on the last turn with his steering.

Due to illness, some St. Mary's novices could not compete and had to be replaced on race day by coxswains who knew
how to row. They performed valiantly, showing that they can handle an oar as well as a rudder. They were John Miskena,
Justin Elwood, Luke Davis, and James Thiede.

"It was a great example of sportsmanship and friendly hospitality between two no-quarter rivals on the water. We're
looking forward to seeing them on our water this spring," was John Ray, Head Coach of St. Mary's' assessment.
