St. Mary's and St. Ignatius rowers do battle on Orchard Lake on April 19.

Orchard Lake -- Defending state champion Orchard Lake St. Mary's hosted defending Midwest Scholastic Rowing Champion St. Ignatius at the second-annual Canfield Cup Regatta on Saturday, April 19.
In the end, St. Ignatius took the cup back to Cleveland earning the win over St. Mary's.
It was the first spring competition for the Eaglets and the third for the Wildcats.
At the Canfield Cup, St. Mary's and St. Ignatius battled over a 1,500-meter course on the north side of Orchard Lake . It was the second year of the event.
St. Ignatius won the following races: Novice 8, Varsity 4, 150-pound double scull, 140-pound novice 4, 150-pound 4, Freshman 8, Quadruple scull, Novice 4, Second 150-pound 8, and 150-pound 8.
St. Mary's won the Double scull, Pair without coxswain, Second Varsity 8, and Varsity 8 races.
St. Mary's Head Coach John Ray said, "It showed the hard work the heavyweights had put in over the winter, and the other boats will show well in Michigan . You have to remember, this was St. Ignatius' third race this spring and our first, so we do hope to get a lot faster."
The regatta is named after St. Ignatius Chaplain Father Canfield.
The two crews will see each other again at the 2008 Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championships on May 10 and 11 on Lake Harsha outside of Cincinnati .
St. Ignatius has won the last five Midwest Championships.
Before competing for the Midwest Championships, St. Mary's will head to Wyandotte on April 26 to defend their Hebda Cup title. St. Mary's last won the Midwest championship in 2001 and was champion from 1994-1999. The Eaglets have also won 13 of the past 14 Hebda Cups (the Michigan state championship). The Eaglets were champions from 1994 to 2005 and in 2007.
St. Mary's will also compete in the Wy-Hi Regatta in Wyandotte on May 2-3, and the Michigan State Championship on May 17-18 on Kent Lake, the Southern Ontario Championships in London, Ont. on May 24, and the Canadian Championships at St. Catharines, Ont. in June.
