St. Mary's Crews rows in Chicago
By Dan Sahutske
CHICAGO--In spite of rain and a moderate breeze that stiffened as the day went on, St. Mary's rowers competed successfully at the Greater Chicago Juniors Rowing Championship over the weekend in Crystal Lake, Illinois.
The Light eight, consisting of Adam Montville, Evan Lyons, Kyle Sahutske, Andrew Pope-Starnes, Robert Clemente, Mike DiCiuccio, Tom Stachelski, and Robert Hurles, steered by John Miskena, won gold in a very close victory where they came from behind in the last ten strokes.
"That shows the toughness we've trained for," was the comment of their coach Mike Anton.
The heavyweights did not fare so well, using a similar strategy, they were held off to second.
Their coach Chris Czarnecki said, "No worries, we'll show more speed at the Midwests "
The novice eight got locked into a vicious steering duel where another boat crossed into their lane, clashed oars with them twice, and forced them off the course, but they finished, out of the medals but in the running. The stern four of that boat then got directly into another four with no time to breathe and raced junior varsity.
Their coach, John Ray, said "I asked them if they were reeady to go, they said they were born ready, so I let them go."
They went off and won their heat, making a great show of grit. They were Richard Lee, Kevin Manz, Thomas Sellers, and Joe
Simon, steered by James Thiede
The finals were cancelled as the breeze stiffened to a gale, but the boys got to show some speed that bodes well for the
Midwest Championships in Cincinnati next weekend.
