All-Area boys team has speed, will and power to burn up track

BY DAN STICKRADT OF THE OBSERVER AND ECCENTRIC

Another banner year for boys track and field is in the record books.

Like in years past, loal track & field stars showcased their mettle at the various championship meets, with several top-10 individual and team performances at the recent regional, Oakland County and state meets

Among the most noteworthy were the sprint groups from Southfield, Detroit Country Day and Orchard Lake St. Mary's; throwers from Farmington Harrison and Birmingham Brother Rice; distance crews of Bloomfield Hills Lahser and Lake Orion; and dozens of standouts in between.

All of which can be found somewhere on the 2006 Eccentric All-Area Boys Track and Field Team, selected by a panel of area coaches,

Following is a profile of each first team member.

FIELD EVENTS

SHOT PUT: DARRIS SAWTELLE, Birmingham Brother Rice -- A junior, Sawtelle displayed plenty of power at the end of the season, finishing third at the county and Division 1 state meets. He was also West Bloomfield regional and Catholic League champion and had a best of 53-7. He has already committed to Tennessee for football.

DISCUS: CHRIS PYANT, Farmington Harrison -- One of the area's top throwers the past two years, Pyant excelled in both the discus and shot put. In the discus, he was the OAA Division II, county and Linden regional champ and finished sixth at the Division 2 state meet with a toss of 164-3. He was also a regional, county and league runner-up in the shot put and finished 20th in the state in that event. Pyant will play football at Western Michigan.

"He worked hard for four years and by the end of the season, he was right up there at every meet," said coach John Reed. "He just kept getting stronger every year and he is now ready to play college football."

HIGH JUMP: MYCHAEL WHITE, Southfield-Lathrup -- A converted basketball player, White really came on strong in his second season of track. The senior was consistently jumping over 6-foot-3 and placed first at the West Bloomfield regional, second at the OAA Division II, third at the county in a career-best 6-5 and fourth at the Roosevelt Invitational. He capped his career by placing fourth at the D-1 state finals.

"We talked him into coming out for track after basketball last season and he was pretty good, and this year he consistently jumped well," said coach Ravi Smith. "He was around the 6-3 to 6-4 range most of the year and cleared 6-5. I think he realized that he could be good at this and worked a little harder this year."

LONG JUMP: CHRIS UBOKUDOM, Southfield -- A senior, Ubokudom was the most consistent of the area's strong group of long jumpers this season. He was the West Bloomfield regional and OAA Division I champ, landed third at the West Bloomfield Invitational, fourth at the county and capped his season by placing third at the D-1 state meet. His best this season was 21-11.

POLE VAULT: KYLE JOHNS, Lake Orion -- Johns is at a disadvantage, because the OAA does not sponsor the pole vault, but the junior did add on a couple of feet to his resume vaulting solely at invitationals. Among his top performances this season included second at the Oxford Invitational, West Bloomfield Invitational and Ashley Relays, fifth at the county and sixth at the Division 1 Holly regional. His best effort was 12-6.

"He did a great job considering he couldn't compete and contribute in our duals," said coach Stan Ford. "When he had a chance to compete, he stepped up in a bunch of meets for us. He worked hard to add a couple of feet this year and I think he's capable of being even better next year if he keeps at it."

HURDLES

110 HIGH HURDLES: CAMERON MURPHY, Farmington Harrison -- The latest in a long line of standout hurdlers at Harrison, this senior shined at the championship meets this season. In the 110s, he was the OAA Division II and Linden regional champion, placed second at the county (14.2) and finished third at the D-2 state finals. In his signature 300 hurdles race, he was unbeaten, including winning the state championship. He was clocked at 38.5 this year, which tied a school record. Murphy also represented Michigan at the Midwest Meet of Champions and finished a fine sixth in the 300s.

"Cameron is another one of those kids who worked hard for four years and it paid off for him in the end," said Reed. "We've had three state champion hurdles here recently and Cameron worked hard to become a champion. In both hurdles race, he was tough to beat, and winning one and placing third in the other at the state meet is proof at what hard work can do."

300 INTERMEDIATE HURDLES: JOHN LEE, Troy -- Each year, Lee shaved time off the clock and wound up seventh at the D-1 state finals in a career-best 39.1. He was also the Warren Mott regional and OAA Division I champion and finished second at the county behind Harrison's Murphy. In the 110s, Lee was second at the league and fourth at the regional in 15.1, missing the state qualifying mark by one-tenth of a second. Lee also ran on the Colts' 1,600 relay that was top-five at the league, county and regional.

"John was one of those seniors who worked so hard to get to the state meet," said coach Eric Prowse. "I think he ran in the high 41s last year and got down to 39.1 this year. He was also valuable to us in the relays and helped us have a good season."

SPRINTS

100 METERS: CHRIS RUCKER, Detroit Country Day -- One of the state's top sprinters, this junior was always in the hunt for breaking the tape. He was the county runner-up in 10.5, won the Almont regional and was the Division 3 state champion in the event. The standout football player also ran on three state-champion relays this year and has placed at the state meet in at least one event each of the past three seasons.

"Chris had a great season for us, he was unbelievably dependent," said coach David Wilson. "The 100 was his best event, but he also ran three relays and didn't mind leading off, even with his type of speed. He has that team-first mentality."

200 METERS: ANTHONY BOWMAN, Orchard Lake St. Mary's -- Another standout football prospect, Bowman had breakaway speed and was rarely beaten this season in the 100 or 200. In the 100, he was the Catholic League, Algonac regional, West Bloomfield Invitational and county champ (10.4), finished fifth at the prestigious Roosevelt Invitational and was third at the D-2 state finals. In the 200, he was first at the league, regional and county (21.8) and second at the state meet. He also anchored the Eaglets' state champion 400- and 800-meter relay units.

400 METERS: LYNDON JOHNSON, Southfield -- This senior, who will play football at Toledo, was one of the many top-flight sprinters at Southfield, and the 400 was his best event. He was second at the West Bloomfield regional, won the county in 49.7 and tied for fifth at the D-1 state meet. He also ran relays for the Blue Jays during his career.

DISTANCES

800 METERS: BRAD ANDERSON, Rochester Adams -- After a down junior season which saw him fail to make the state-meet cut, Anderson was brilliant during his senior season. He was the OAA Division I and Holly regional champion, finished second at the county to Berkley's Paul Vance, but avenged that loss to win the D-1 state meet in 1:54.21 -- the second fastest ever at Adams. Anderson also ran a leg on the Highlanders' 3,200 relay team that was the league, regional (8:03.6) and county champ that also crossed 15th in the state meet. He will attempt to walk-on at Michigan State.

"Brad qualified for the state meet as a sophomore, then kind of had an off year as a junior. But he came back and had a great senior season," said coach Gary Inman. "He really saved his best for last, winning the state title and beating the only kid that beat him earlier in the year. He's the best kid we've had in the 800 in 30 years."

1,600 METERS: MIKE QUICK, Bloomfield Hills Lahser -- During his storied high school career, Quick ran at eight state championship meets between cross country and track. He was a four-time all-stater in cross country and medaled at the track finals the past three years. Quick departs to Michigan State owning school records in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relay and was always a threat to contend in a multitude of events. He is a four-time league champion in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs and won all three distance races this season at the Livonia Ladywood regional. At the state finals, Quick was eighth in the 1,600 (4:21.89) and fifth in the 3,200 (9:20.4). He was also fourth in the 800 (1:57.3) at the county.

"Based on everything that he had done the past four years, we'll miss him a ton next year," said coach Nick Stration. "It will be difficult to replace a kid like Mike Quick."

3,200 METERS: ROB SHINOUSKIS, Lake Orion -- Another standout in cross country and track, Shinouskis ran on three league and two regional championship squads in his four year career. Headed for Michigan State, Shinouskis was at his best in the 3,200, winning the Oxford Invitational, Ashley Relays, OAA Division I and county meet (9:37.2). He was also second at the Holly regional, fourth at the West Bloomfield Invitational and capped the season by taking third at the D-1 state meet under inclement weather. In the 1,600, Shinouskis was a league champ and fourth at the regional (4:34.7).

"I think the one area where he lacked in the past was his kick at the end of the race and he worked hard to improve that kick and it showed this season," said Ford. "He had a great senior season for us, always placing at the big meets. In duals, he would run many events for us so we could win."

RELAYS

400-METER RELAY: DETROIT COUNTRY DAY (Chris Rucker, EJ Whitlow, Erik Williams, Jonas Gray) -- This unit was unbeaten this season, winning the Almont regional, county and D-3 state meet titles. They also won the Livonia Stevenson Invitational in the event and had a best of 42.4. Whitlow is the lone senior, with Rucker and Williams juniors and Gray a sophomore.

800-METER RELAY: DETROIT COUNTRY DAY (Chris Rucker, Erik Williams, Jonas Gray, Martin Corniffe) -- With Corniffe, a senior, slipping in with two juniors and a sophomore, the Yellow Jackets left the opposition in the dust again this season. They clocked 1.27.8 in winning the county, just a tenth off the school record mark. They were also Stevenson Invite, regional and D-3 state champs. Individually, Corniffe, who will run at Howard, also placed top-five in the 200 and 400 at the state finals, while Gray was a fourth-place finisher in the 100 and 200 at the state level.

"We won three relays at state and finished second to a very good Williamston team in the team scoring and that's a testament to the group of sprinters we had this year," said Wilson. "These kids worked really hard to keep up our tradition."

1,600-METER RELAY: SOUTHFIELD (Rumeal Mckinney, Brian Webster, Lyndon Johnson, Derrick Hunter) -- Made up of two seniors and two juniors in Mckinney and Webster, this unit was hard to handle this spring. They won the Ambrose Relays, West Bloomfield Invitational and county meet in a sizzling 3:21.0. They were also seventh at the D-1 state meet. Using a slightly different lineup, the Bluejays also claimed second at the West Bloomfield regional and third at the OAA Division I league meet.

3,200-METER RELAY: ROCHESTER STONEY CREEK (Eric Viges, Brian Schnurr, Thiago Olson, Nick Casciani) -- In the school's fourth season, this group became Stoney Creek's first realy to medal at the state meet, taking seventh in D-1 in 7:58.99, which shaved nearly seven seconds off their previous best. Made up of seniors Viges and Casciani and two juniors, they were also OAA Division III champ, placed second at both the county and Algonac/Muskrats Relays and third at the Holly regional.

"I think they did save their best for last," offered coach Paul Duffy. "I thought they were capable of going under eight minutes and they did. We should be strong in this event next year, too."
