St. Mary's wins track regional, takes second in Catholic League
BY MIKE ROSENBAUM OF THE OBSERVER AND ECCENTRIC
With victories in six events, Orchard Lake St. Mary's dominated Saturday's Division 2 regional track meet, held at Algonac. The Eaglets finished with 123.4 points, well ahead of second place Marine City's 83.20 points.
Anthony Bowman had a hand in four St. Mary's victories. He led a 1-2-3 Eaglets win in the 100-meter dash, breaking the tape in 10.72 seconds. Aaron Gant was second at 10.97 and Taurian Washington third in a state qualifying time of 11.01.
The top two finishers, plus anyone meeting a pre-determined standard, qualified for the June 3 state meet, which will be held at Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central.
Bowman also won the 200 (22.26) Saturday, narrowly edging second-place Washington (22.37).
St. Mary's other individual winner was Tayler Peruski, who took the 400 (51.87), while Kourtney Price took third (52.95).
Three Eaglets relay teams were also winners. The 400 (43.18) and 800 (1:31.06) relay squads -- which both included Gant, Washington, Dionte Allen and Bowman -- plus the 1600 team (3:32.93), featuring Price, Justin Siller, Andrew Jones and Peruski.
Siller also placed second in both hurdles events, the 110 (15.31) and the 300 (41.54).
U-D Jesuit won Tuesday's Catholic League meet with 131 points, with St. Mary's taking second with 112.
Bowman again swept the sprints, winning the 100 (10.6) and 200 (22.2), edging Gant by .03 in the latter race. Siller won the hurdles, taking the 100 (15.58) and the 300 (41.41). Tayler Peruski placed second in the 400 (51.17).
The Eaglets also won the 400 (43.42) and 800 (1:30.0) relays.
