Rice wins dual meet at St. Mary's
By MARVIN GOODWIN Of The Oakland Press
ORCHARD LAKE -- Orchard Lake St. Mary's had the home-field advantage Monday in its Catholic League dual track meet against Birmingham Brother Rice.
So when the Warriors exited the St. Mary's campus with an 83-45 victory, it was no surprise to Eaglets coach Mark LeFevre, who knew it would have taken a superior performance and luck to defeat Rice.
"We generally get beat up in the mile and two-mile," he said. "We win a fair amount of events, but we don't have depth for second and third places. That usually catches up to you in dual meets."
The Eaglets' Rodney Woodland won the 100 and 200 dashes, Demetrius Jackson won the long jump and Tayler Peruski won the 400 in a swift 49.78 seconds, one of the area's top performances, for St. Mary's.
But the Warriors had their share of victors, too.
Imani DuPerry won the high jump and the 110 and 300 hurdle events -- he clocked 14.68 in the 110s -- and teammate Mike Murphy won the 1,600 and Nick Thomas the 800.
St. Mary's Chas Irmen was second in the 800 and 1,600. Thomas clocked 1:56.74 in the 800, winning by some 50 meters.
Bashar Kazanji was second in both hurdle events for Rice, Keenan Hamilton won the shot put and discus and Mike Gorman was second in the 400 (50.4).
"The kids were reasonably focused," Rice coach Bob Stark said, "and we like to run against St. Mary's. They're a creditable program."
The Eaglets did win the 800 relay with Woodland, Gary Hunter, Robert Bolden and Peruski comprising the winning quartet, which clocked its fastest time of the year (1:31.4).
But Rice eventually won 11 of the 16 events, and scored multiple points in eight of those.
