OLSM's Nickname
Competitive athletics have been in existence at Orchard Lake since the Polish Seminary moved from Detroit in 1909. The Seminary and College athletic teams were referred to as the “Fighting Poles” and the “White Eagles” because of their Polish heritage.
When the High School boys began to compete athletically, the teams were often referred to in much the same manner, with the additional moniker “Prep” or “High School”.
By 1930, St. Mary's College was fielding intercollegiate basketball and baseball teams as the “Eagles”, so naturally, St. Mary's High School then became known as the “Eaglets”.
This nickname continues today, even though St. Mary's College has been absorbed by Madonna University and the St. Mary's College “Eagles” are but a memory.
